USB 3.0 Devices Could Be Seen As Early As 2008

I still remember when USB 2.0 hit the scene. It was like Firewire, only more popular. Transferring files from an external drive was never the same (unless you used Firewire, then it was almost exactly the same as it had been). Well hold onto your hats folks, they're already talking about USB 3.0.

According to the USB 3.0 Promoter Group, they are looking to achieve throughputs roughly 10 times faster than current USB 2.0 technology. Naturally, like the previous standard, they are looking to keep the connectors similar for backwards compatibility, though they are hoping to utilize optical technology in the USB 3.0.

We can expect to see the first USB 3.0 products to hit the market as early as next year. However, we will likely first see it appearing in discreet silicon products, not integrated into PC chipsets like current USB technologies.
