AMC has been anything but secretive about plans to remove now-former leading star Andrew Lincoln ("Rick Grimes") from its hit zombie apocalypse show. Fans have known to expect his removal for many weeks, assuming it would follow the same trend set by other major exits: a beloved character would die and life would go on for everyone else.

That's what happened last Sunday...until it didn't. The character Grimes was shown blowing himself up near a bridge filled with zombies, his death all but assured, until a helicopter appeared to save him. Grimes was loaded on the vehicle and taken away, leaving shocked viewers to wonder what they'd just witnessed.

That's the story AMC will tell in three theatrical movies, according to The New York Times. The publication has published an interview with Lincoln and included a major piece of news: AMC is cooking up three movies and will start production on the first one in 2019. Lincoln revealed that he's known about these plans and that's why he hasn't been upset during past interviews about his planned departure.

The movies will not be adaptions of existing Walking Dead comic books, according to the report. Fans will get an entirely new storyline involving the character Rick Grimes and what happened after his cliffhanger rescue. Additional details about the movie aren't known at this time, however.
