The real Galaxy Fold 2 is still coming later this year

Samsung's second foldable phone is formally debuting next week but it is no successor to last year's Galaxy Fold. Indeed, the Galaxy Z Flip not only has an extremely different design, it also had a very different codename to begin with. The foldable clamshell might not sit well with some hardcore foldable fans but those won't have to look too far into the future because, at least based on a single sighting, the true Galaxy Fold successor is coming soon.

Companies love their product codenames in futile attempts to hide the identity of their future products. Some are more consistent, like Google's fondness for fish. Others are seemingly random but at least Samsung is apparently using a more discernible pattern.

According to GalaxyClub, work on a device called Win2 has already begun. Considering the very first Galaxy Fold was called the Winner, the association is almost clear as day. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip, which was previously presumed to be the Galaxy Fold 2, was internally called Bloom.

That said, nothing else was leaked about this actual Galaxy Fold 2 other than it will have a 5G variant codenamed, what else, the Win2 5G. If the pattern holds, however, we can expect this foldable device to be an iteration over the first Galaxy Fold rather than a departure. Hopefully, that also means significant improvements and fixes to flaws.

The Win2 might not be the only foldable phone Samsung has planned for this year. It has already stated that it will be focusing on high-end phones and foldables this year and hopes to ship millions of the latter. Whether those plans translate into reality will largely depend on how much the Galaxy Z Flip proves to have improved Samsung's design and manufacturing.
