The Boondocks Will Return With New Seasons On HBO Max
HBO Max has announced plans to offer another two new seasons of The Boondocks, an animated sitcom that aired from 2005 to 2014. The new episodes will be made available exclusively on the upcoming HBO Max video service starting next year. The show's creator Aaron McGruder will return to the series as showrunner for the upcoming new seasons. The Boondocks features 8-year-old Riley, 10-year-old Huey, and their grandfather Robert Freeman who is the pair's legal guardian. The show's name refers to Woodcrest, the suburb where the family moved from Chicago's South Side (aka, the boondocks). The show earned viewer and critical praise over the course of its four seasons, which totaled 55 episodes.
According to Variety, HBO Max has ordered two new seasons that will total 24 new episodes, the first batch of which will arrive on the platform in Fall 2020. The new seasons will focus on Riley, Huey, and Freeman following a recent move to a suburb in Maryland.
Show creator Aaron McGruder said in a statement:
There's a unique opportunity to revisit the world of 'The Boondocks' and do it over again for today. It's crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There's a lot to say and it should be fun.
Mainstay Entertainment's Norm Aladjem, plus Meghann Collins Robertson and Seung Kim, will join McGruder as executive producers on the series. Sony Pictures Television and Sony Pictures Animation will produce the show. HBO Max will arrive in spring 2020.
