T-Mobile backs another wind farm, will use 100% renewable energy by 2021

T-Mobile is the latest company to announce plans to go green, at least in the environmental sense. The Uncarrier has committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2021, and as part of its announcement has revealed that it has entered into a contract with Infinity Renewables' Solomon Forks Wind Project in Kansas.

T-Mobile has joined the initiative RE100, making it one of more than 100 well known businesses promising to transition fully to renewable energy. To underscore its commitment, T-Mobile has announced that it is backing a second wind farm project, the aforementioned Solomon Forks project.

The contract is for 160MWs from the Kansas-based project, joining the Oklahoma-based Red Dirt Wind project from Enel Green Power. The latter of the two went online last month, kickstarting what will eventually be T-Mobile's 320MWs of energy, enough to cover about 60-percent of the company's national energy needs.

T-Mobile says it will buy annual wind power is ample enough supply to cover the rest of its yearly energy usage. As well, the Uncarrier says it is backing "projects that wouldn't exist" if it weren't for T-Mobile's backing, something it says helps generate new renewable energy sources.

In talking about the plan, T-Mobile CEO John Legere said, "We expect to cut T-Mobile's energy costs by around $100 million in the next 15 years thanks to this move." Many other big-name companies have announced similar commitments, including big tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft.
