Why These Forgotten Airlines No Longer Soar The Skies
By THARINDU DIAS
People Express
Launched in 1981, People Express was a pioneer in the world of low-cost carriers to provide budget-friendly travel to relatively underserved destinations.
Unfortunately, the U.S.' Big Three — American, Delta, and United — began slashing their prices to neutralize People Express' main selling point, leading to its eventual downfall.
MGM Grand Air
MGM Grand Air was a luxury airline with three destinations: John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, Los Angeles International Airport, and Las Vegas.
It was designed to fly rich clientele to founder Kirk Kerkorian's Las Vegas casinos, but the target customers often chose other airlines' first-class options or took private jets.
Kingfisher Airlines
Sharing its name with a brand of beer brewed by United Breweries Group, Kingfisher was an Indian airline that offered flyers glamor and good service.
Despite being the second-largest carrier in the Indian domestic market, Kingfisher collapsed in 2012 due to being unable to pay its debts or staff.
