Why Ford's T-Bird Retro Reboot Fell Flat
By ANDREI NEDELEA
With a design inspired by the 1955 to 1957 iteration, Ford launched the 11th generation of Thunderbird in 2001. However, the car failed to attract many buyers.
Its sales flop led to the T-Bird being removed from production in 2005. While other brands have had successful retro-inspired models, there were some problems with Ford’s plan.
Balancing the old with the modern is the key to a successful retro redesign. Ford’s final Thunderbird took a nostalgia-heavy approach, which may have pushed customers away.
Although it had a sporty look, Ford never saw the 2002 T-Bird as a performance car. Some buyers may have felt misled by its appearance and its actual capabilities.
Ford’s Thunderbird also went against models like the Chevrolet Corvette and BMW Z4, which proved to be much more enjoyable rides than the large, less practical T-Bird.
