Why Ford Really Decided To Discontinue The Focus
By CHRIS LITTLECHILD
While it’s far from a flashy high-performance sports car, the Ford Focus has long been a popular pick in the company’s lineup, becoming the world’s best-selling car model of 2012.
Despite being beloved, Ford announced in 2022 that production of the Focus would cease in 2025. This decision was based on one particular reason for the model’s popularity
The original 1998 Ford Focus balanced performance and practicality using a less fuel-hungry engine. Ford later equipped it with the EcoBoost engine family.
However, the EcoBoost would ultimately help doom the Focus family as drivers become more environmentally conscious. Ford has since become dedicated to producing electric vehicles.
An EV model of the car, the 23kWh Ford Focus Electric, was released in 2011. Unfortunately, the Focus performed rather miserably.
This isn’t the only factor in Ford’s decision. The increasing popularity of SUVs and the 2021-2022 semiconductor shortage cemented the fact that the Focus was falling out of favor.
