What To Know About The 8.1L Vortec, Chevy’s Last Big Block Engine

Once a staple of the hot rod and modification scenes, the era of the big block V8 engines has largely ended thanks to technological advances in the 1980s and 1990s.
However, one GM platform big block Vortec engine held its own and remained in production for the brand’s heavy-duty vehicles until 2007: the Vortec 8.1L.
While not the most efficient engine out there, the Vortec 8.1L featured significant improvements over its predecessors, including updated electronics and electronic fuel injection.
The result was 340 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. It was also used in medium-duty commercial trucks and boats, pushing boats up to 550 horsepower and 690 lb-ft of torque.
Ultimately, the LS platform drove the Vortec 8.1L production to its demise, as it could retain the V8s 360 horsepower capability while substantially increasing
the fuel economy.
Luckily, a handful of aftermarket companies and enthusiasts have kept the engine relevant for those interested in getting it or upgrading one they already own.
