This YouTuber Turned An Old iPod Into A Retro Spotify Player
By TUSHAR MEHTA
Although Apple announced in May 2022 the end of the iPod, the beloved device still holds a special place in many music lovers’ hearts. One such fan, a YouTuber with the alias Guy Dupont, used DIY wizardry to convert his iPod Classic into a device that exclusively streams Spotify, but his customizations are not for novices and require considerable technical know-how.
Dupont retrofitted the iPod with a Raspberry Pi Zero W module that brings Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, replaced the Apple 30-pin docking adapter with a micro-USB port for charging, and ensured the buttons on the front, including the click wheel, worked as intended. The end result of this ambitious and inspiring project is cause for celebration among fans of the iPod Classic.
Other DIY builders can follow Dupont’s footsteps through the details on the project’s Hackaday page and by watching his videos. If fans lack Dupont’s technical prowess but miss the iPod interface, they can visit https://tannerv.com/ipod/ for a virtual player designed like the classic device; they can even sign in with their Spotify or Apple Music accounts to load their libraries.
