This Electric Car Starts At Only $18,500, But You Only Get Three Wheels
By ALEX LAPERRIERE
Electra Meccanica’s first production-ready electric car, dubbed the Solo, starts at a very affordable $18,500, and its name is likely a reflection of the fact that it has only one rear wheel and only one seat. Although buyers of the Solo will definitely be going about their day solo, the car has 100 miles of range, which is more than enough for the average daily commute.
A Canadian company, Electra Meccanica thinks it has done just enough to its car to allow people to adapt to its quirkiness while creating a brand-new target audience: individuals who buy a car solely to get to work and back. In other words, the automaker isn't targeting those who need 300+ miles of range and space to carry family members on trips.
Despite Bluetooth, USB charging, a rear-view camera, AC, and keyless entry, the Solo isn’t exactly riveting to drive, but it does have enough trunk space to fit a few bags of groceries, a briefcase, and a set of gym clothes. It has a top speed of 80 mph, due to its 82 horsepower engine with 128 lb-ft of torque, and goes from 0-60 mph in 10 seconds.
