The Top 10 Highest Selling Game Consoles, Ranked
By JOE HINDY
10. Game Boy Advance
Although it’s not as iconic as the original Game Boy Color or Nintendo DS, the Game Boy Advance still sold 81.5 million units over its lifetime
Its popularity was thanks to the new “Pokémon” games and its low price tag of $99.99. Another benefit was its backward capabilities with its predecessors’ cartridges.
9. Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 was a huge console for Microsoft. It rode the wave of the online multiplayer revolution that started with the original Xbox and Microsoft’s Xbox Live service.
Selling more than 84 million units and releasing many great games, such as “Halo 3,” the Xbox 360 also brought new features and extra gadgets like the Kinect.
8. PlayStation 3
While the PlayStation 3 is reportedly the lowest-selling discontinued PlayStation console, Sony still managed to move an impressive 87.4 million units as of 2017.
Like the Xbox 360, the PS3 featured many great titles like “The Last of Us.” It also had unique features, like backwards compatibility and the ability to play Blu-ray DVDS.
7. Nintendo Wii
Nintendo claims the Wii sold just over 101 million units during its highly successful run despite being released against the technologically superior Xbox 360 and PS3.
The Wii Remote was a defining factor in the console’s popularity. It allowed developers to create unique games like “Wii Sports,” which has over 82.9 million units sold.
6. PlayStation
The original PlayStation was an excellent console and sold 102.4 million units, whereas its Nintendo 64 rival only managed to move 32.9 million units.
What made the PlayStation great was its selection of now iconic games, such as “Gran Turismo,” “Final Fantasy 7,” “Resident Evil,” and “Metal Gear Solid.”
