The Most Advanced Nuclear Submarines Ever Made
By DANIEL FEININGER
Borei-A-Class
The Russian Borei-A-class submarine is an improvement over the previous Borei-class design, bringing enhanced stealth capabilities and deep-sea maneuverability.
These nuclear-powered submarines are typically armed with 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of striking targets at a distance of 6,200 miles.
Virginia-Class
A newer addition to the U.S. Navy, The Virginia-class fast attack nuclear-powered submarines can reach speeds over 25 knots and excel in shallow-water operations.
They come equipped with Tomahawk missiles and MK48 ADCAP torpedoes. One unique feature of these submarines is the reconfigurable torpedo room.
Vanguard-Class
Serving as one of the U.K.'s primary nuclear deterrents, the Vanguard-class submarines carry 16 Trident II D5 missiles with as many as 12 MIRV nuclear warheads.
While the newest Vanguard-class vessel was commissioned in 1999, they are within competitive standards with other nuclear submarines.
