The $29.99 all-metal desktop Stirling engine kit is one of the simplest. It can be assembled in 15 minutes and is recommended for ages 14 and up.
Stirling engines are remarkably efficient, relying on the expansion and compression that come with temperature changes to provide power.
Steam Engine Kit
Also for $29.99 is the Exploring Kid Steam Engine Kit. This mostly plastic kit, when assembled, includes a boiler and tube leading to a piston.
Due to the open flame and numerous small parts, this kit is recommended for ages 14 and up. Assembly time isn’t specified, but the kit is relatively simple with only 43 pieces.
V8 Engine Kit
For a more authentic kit, the 270-piece metal and plastic V8 engine kit features components found in a real automotive V8 engine, such as pistons and a timing belt.
The battery-operated engine sells for $89.99 and is functional when assembled. The model is advertised as being suitable for ages 12 and up.
