The 10 Gasoline Engines You Can Count On Most For Reliability

Toyota 22RE
Engines like the 22RE have helped Toyota earn its reputation for reliability. Part of the automaker’s R engine lineup, the 22RE debuted in 1981 and continued until 1995.
The engine made its way into several Toyota models during that period, including the 1981 Celica, the Toyota Hilux truck from 1981 to 1995, and the 4Runner from 1985 through 1995.
5S-FE DOHC
With numerous stories about cars with Toyota’s 5S-FE DOHC engine reaching half a million miles or more, it’s easily one of the automaker’s most reliable engines.
The gas-efficient, 2.2-liter inline-four 5S-FE engine existed in some form from 1990 until 2001, being used in cars such as the Camry, Celica, and Solara.
Jeep 4.0 Engine
The Jeep 4.0 engine is one of the best engines the brand has ever used in terms of reliability, easily reaching over 200,000 miles with minor maintenance.
It was used in models like the 1987 to 2001 Cherokee and was widely considered one of the most reliable the brand had ever used when it was retired in 2006.
Buick 3800
From 1988 until 2008, Buick used the GM 3800, also known as the Buick 3800. It’s not uncommon to hear stories of this legendary engine hitting 300,000 miles.
The engine made its way into various GM vehicles, including Buick’s entire full-size car lineup, the Chevy Impala, Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight, and Pontiac Bonneville.
Slant-Six Family
The Chrysler Slant Six is one of the brand’s most iconic engines. It lasted from 1960 until 1984 and then exclusively in Dodge trucks until 1987.
There are many stories of people seeing this engine top 300,000 miles. The Slant-Six was used in over a dozen cars and trucks across the Chrysler, Plymouth, and Dodge lineup.
