The 289 was used in the earliest GT40 endurance racers and underwent several upgrades to boost its power over the years, ranging from 200 to 390 horsepower.
In 1968, Ford increased the 289 block to form an engine with a capacity of 302 cubic inches, whose base form produced as much as 230 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
In addition to being found in Mustangs and Cougars, Ford used the engine in models such as Torino and Ford trucks and vans. The engine remains popular with tuners and modders.
The 427 first appeared in the 1963 Galaxie and immediately succeeded on the NASCAR circuit. Street versions of the 427 were in models like the Thunderbird as late as 1976.
