Retro-Styled Transformers Game Shown Off At E3
One game at E3 this year that didn't get the big announcement treatment during yesterday's Xbox One and PS4 presentations is Transformers: Devastation. An action game from developers Platinum Games that features a look exactly like the old 80's Transformer cartoons. To be released this fall for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, the game really ratchets up the nostalgia by getting longtime Optimus Prime actor Peter Cullen to lend his voice.
In addition to Optimus Prime, players can expect other classic Transformers, including Bumblebee, Soundwave, Grimlock, Sideswipe, Megatron, Wheeljack, Devastator, and more. The game will have players facing off against the big name Decepticons, however only Autobots will be playable.
Platinum Games' Kenji Saito says the action gameplay focuses heavily on transforming between robots and vehicles. Players can change modes on the fly, whenever they want, and even use it combo attacks on multiple enemies. Saito provides an example of racing around the city in vehicle mode, driving into an enemy to push them back, then changing into robot mode to deliver a punch. Or, start off with an attack as a robot, but then switch modes to quickly evade the enemy's counter.
Like Devastation's art style, the story is said to be comic book-inspired, and will take players from Earth to Cybertron. Speaking of the game's look, the developers chose to focus on the 80's animation style as a way of paying tribute to the original Transformers series and characters. After watching that trailer above, it seems they've certainly nailed it.
