Nokia 7.2 Leak Points To A Big Design Change

HMD Global has, by now, made about a dozen Nokia smartphones but, save for the odd Nokia 9 PureView, not many of them can be considered eye-catching or visually unique. That may be changing next month when it unleashes yet another handful, including the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2. And if these leaked renders of cases for the Nokia 7.2 are correct, then the smartphone maker is ready to make a few changes to its mold.

It's not that Nokia phones are unpleasing to the eyes but, save for HMD Global's laudable software support, they don't exactly stand out among other phones in the market. Yes, there are Nokia phones with notches and one with an unusual penta-lens camera setup. The latter, however, is the exception rather than the norm.

HMD Global might be introducing a slightly new design language at least for two models. Leaked images of cases for the Nokia 7.2 point to a phone with a rather slim profile. Most if not all Nokia phones so far have been on the thick side of things.

More important, perhaps, is the round camera bump on its back that contains three cameras and a flash in a square formation. According to leaks, one of those will be a 48 megapixel sensor and one will have a 120-degree wide-angle lens. The other is most likely a depth sensor.

That said, the Nokia 7.2 is still going to be a mid-range phone, just like its older siblings. Other leaks refer to a Snapdragon 660 running the show. There's also a 6.3-inch or bigger screen with a tiny waterdrop notch on top. The Nokia 6.2 is believed to be nearly identical, which raises the question of how HMD plans to differentiate the two. At least, for the time being, the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 will be able to stand out from its other siblings that HMD Global plans to unveil at IFA 2019, the first time the company will have a presence at the annual event.
