Moto X "Pure Edition" Said To Be In The Works

Save for Google's Nexus-branded phones, the Motorola take on Android is as pure as you can get. Building on that momentum, Motorola is said to be releasing a very stock Moto X (2014), free of any branding or carrier involvement. Called the "Pure Edition", this Moto might be as close to Nexus as you can get.

Motorola found favor last year by taking a solid phone and tweaking just enough of Android to make it a standalone experience. The spec sheet didn't match up to other flagships, but that didn't seem to matter much. Users and tech pundits alike quickly found reason to use a Moto X in lieu of other Android handsets, and the price point was a major win for Motorola.

The "Pure Edition" is said to come with an unfettered Android experience, suggesting you'd lose all the special tweaks Motorola made specifically for their device (camera, drive assist, etc.). For purists (pun intended), this may sound a lot like Android Silver, or a Google Play Edition device. The naming fits much of Motorola's website chatter, where they call the Moto X a device with "pure style", and "pure performance".

If you're excitedly anticipating this "Pure Edition", try the decaf. We've not yet got our hands on the Moto X proper, which drops later this month, and if last year is any indication — carriers will have first crack before any unlocked or "Pure" version comes out. If you can stand the wait, and just don't care for carrier "bloat", a Moto X (2014) "Pure Edition" may be what you've been looking for.
