Let's Try WhatsApp With End-To-End Encryption
So you'd like to enable the brand new Encryption security WhatsApp has brought to the world today, do you? Lucky you, there's not a whole lot you're going to have to be doing. Thanks to WhatsApp's newest software update, the app and ecosystem now has end-to-end encryption automatically. According to the developers behind this app, "When end-to-end encrypted, your messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, and calls are secured from falling into the wrong hands."
According to WhatsApp's developers, "WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption is available when you and the people you message use the latest versions of our app." This means you're going to need to update. To update your WhatsApp app, you'll want to head to your apps in your Google Play or iTunes App Store, find WhatsApp, and hit the UPDATE button.
If there is no update button, chances are you're already where you need to be.
As the WhatsApp crew suggests, once you've got the newest version of the app, "all of this happens automatically: no need to turn on settings or set up special secret chats to secure your messages."
If you'd like the in-depth version of how WhatsApp encrypts your messages, you'll want to head over to the WhatsApp Security page and find the "Get the Details" section. There you'll tap a document whose link is titled "in-depth technical explanation."
Above you'll see an image which makes encryption look easy. You type a message, it's encrypted (turned into gobbledegook), and sent. Your friend gets the scrambled message, it is decrypted, and they can see what you've typed.
This system also works for WhatsApp Calls, which are now also encrypted, start to finish.
WhatsApps' system is such that no-one but you and the person you are communicating with will be able to read or listen in on your communications. Only you. Secure.
