iPad Air 2 Has A8X Chip, Possible 2GB RAM
The iPad Air 2 is likely going to make an appearance later this week at Apple's event. In addition to some Mac news, it's believed we'll get an iPad update, likely across the lineup. New components for the iPad Air 2 have reportedly leaked, and show a new processor as well as that rumored RAM uptick. If you held out on the iPad Air last year because it just wasn't powerful enough, the iPad Air 2 one might be one worth grabbing.
The A8X chipset is well branded in these leaked images, which might be a nod to the past. Apple used to note A(whatever) chips on the iPad lineup with an X, but got away from that with the iPad Air, The last generation iPad had an A7 chipset, but no X. There isn't much difference in the two, other than the clock rate being quicker for iPad.
A8 or A8X, we don't really care — they're the same. An uptick in RAM, though, that's important. It looks as though the iPad Air 2 will get 2GB RAM, which is double what the iPad Air has.
The numerical branding on the chip isn't conclusive, but it definitely looks like 2GB RAM. The second character in the code looks to be an "8", which would denote the RAM size. An "A" would mean 1GB RAM.
That's the good news. The bad news? It looks like Apple will follow the iPhone Memory scheme, and house 16GB in the base model. That could mean — like the iPhone — the next step would be 64GB, then 128GB. That effort pushes more 64GB models, and a higher price point.
