Google Play Finally Gets Promo Codes
One thing that has been missing since Google Play launched was a way for developers to let people try their game at no cost, assuming it's a paid game. There have been no promo codes to be handed out and the only thing to do would be send out Google Play cards to folks that devs want to give a free game to.
That has finally changed with Google rolling out promo codes to Google Play developers. There are a few caveats with the new promo codes. Promo codes can't be used for in-app subscriptions. Devs can allow players to use promo codes for apps and games and on non-subscription in-app purchases.
Each game has a hard limit to 500 promo codes per quarter. If devs don't use all 500 codes in a given quarter, the unused codes do not roll over to the next quarter. Use them or lose them. Developers can set expiration dates for the promo codes with the codes are good for up to a year.
Developers can enable the promo codes in the Dev Console. With promo codes finally added it will be easier for developers to give away free copies of their games to fans in contests and via other means as well as making it easier for reviewers to get their hands on games to write about.
