Ghostbusters Universe Expands: New Movie To Star Channing Tatum
We told you about the all-female cast Ghostbusters movie coming out this summer. Now, Sony will be creating the new production company Ghost Corps to handle all of the films in the re-envisioned Ghostbusters universe. They will also look to continue the Ghostbusters legacy through television, merchandising, and toys. (Can I get excited about the toys for a minute?) Even without a series reboot, the toys have always done well 25 years after the last movie. First up for Ghost Corps is to create a second Ghostbusters movie that will begin production this June.
This second movie won't be a sequel to the ladies' version that is already in pre-production. Instead, it's going to be its own movie that shares the same Ghostbusters universe. Think about how Marvel has approached its venture into the Avengers series. Each movie exists in the same Marvel universe, and characters can also cross over into a stand-alone movie and help out the other hero. The characters then can unite to in a single movie to bridge fan bases and bring in the big bucks. The Marvel universe has become such a Hollywood juggernaut, that Ghost Corps may be looking to repeat its success by lining up new films for its own Ghostbusters universe.
We're hearing that Channing Tatum may star in it. This should be interesting. He handled action and comic timing with aplomb in 21 Jump Street, which was also a reboot. Perhaps he does have what it takes to make a new Ghostbusters film into a blockbuster. We're just hoping it doesn't become a Jupiter Ascending style debacle, where even a big budget special effects couldn't save a lackluster storyline.
But, Tatum has been "attached" to other projects that have yet to come through. Springing to mind, he was proposed to star in the role of Gambit in a stand-alone film from the X-Men series, but that movie has het to come to fruition. All in all, we can get on board for a second Ghostbusters movie which will hopefully maintain the comic-action stylings of the original, this time with Channing Tatum.
