Galaxy S8 Might Come With An Ominous "Beast Mode"

The Samsung Galaxy S8, which might be delayed in the US until April, is rumored to be a great many things. This latest one, however, isn't one of them. It is, on the other hand, still interesting, or amusing at the very least. According to some trademark paperwork filed in the European Union reveals that Samsung is introducing a still unknown "Beast Mode" in the Galaxy S8. While it's exact nature is still unknown, the very name seems to already imply it: it will devour your battery like there's no tomorrow.

Smartphones today already offer different power modes, but most, though not all, tend to go towards the battery-saving end of the spectrum. Some do have "Performance" or even "Gaming" mode that try to squeeze out more juice of the tiny computer. One can only wonder what a "Beast" will entail.

The Galaxy S8 is expected to really be a beast of a smartphone as far as hardware is concerned. It is expected to sport the, by then, highest end Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, or an Exynos equivalent, with probably 6 or even 8 GB of RAM. There is a high chance that it will be geared towards VR scenarios, where such an ultra high performance mode would be handy.

However, given Samsung's history and current situation, a Beast Mode would be a very risky move. Taxing the smartphone's processor any more than normal would inevitably lead to more heat, which could lead to dangerous battery temperatures. Even if it doesn't explode, the mere presence of excessive heat could still cause users to become concerned or even panic. The last thing that Samsung needs is another literally hot smartphone and now might not be the time to introduce something so beastly.
