DataWind PocketSurfer2 Has Cheap Internet That You Can't Use
The PocketSurfer 2 from DataWind is currently going for a decent price of $350 in the UK. This Internet-focused device is perfect for browsing the web on the go. However, there is an Internet connection catch you should probably be aware of.
The device has a built in GPS, email and web browser. That is all, so if you need more than that, look elsewhere. However, the real attraction is the free Internet access for the first year. You can even pay an additional 40 EUR and be covered for another year. But as it turns out, it's not worth it.
Unfortunately, the PocketSurfer2 relies on the GPRS network. Not even their "patented data compression technology" can make that feel like anything faster than a snail's pace. Plus, your free Internet access amounts to just 20 hours a month! You can have the cap lifted for $6 more a month, but come on! That's a lot of double talk, if you ask me. The battery life is also pretty bad at just four hours. The screen is super small at 640 x 240 and feels very much stuck in the past. While this one's a good idea on the surface, it's definitely not impressive upon closer inspection.
