Confirmed: Disney Is Making A Third TRON Film
If you're of a certain age, you were lucky enough to have been influenced by TRON, and later TRON: Legacy, as they arrived in theaters. Though the first two were nearly 30 years separated from one another, a new report confirms the wait for a third installment won't take as long. Several sources are confirming Disney is moving forward with a third installment in the franchise, tentatively titled TRON 3 (because what else would you call it right now?). There are working titles floating around, too, which may hint at the film's plot-line.
According to Entertainment Weekly — one of the sources confirming the news — TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski is back in charge, and will direct a film possibly named TRON: Ascension, TRON: Redemption, or TRON: Rise of the Isomorphics.
Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde are also both returning for the third installment. Jeff Bridges likely won't be back, unless he's somehow a purely digital copy that made recursive clones of himself. Man, I really hope I just made up a real spoiler, now.
There is currently no known timeline for starting production, but other sources claim it will start later this year or next year in Vancouver.
Given the process a film like TRON needs (CGI, etc.), that likely means we're looking at a Summer 2017 release, or possibly even sometime in 2018. That's a long way off, but a few years is much easier to tolerate than three decades. At least Disney didn't relegate TRON to the "RECTIFY!" heap.
