Canon EOS 40D

This much awaited device is finally going to be hitting store shelves within the next two weeks. It has been hyped up since this time last year and is finally arriving.

So what's the difference you might ask, and that would be a good question, but with a resolution increase and integration of several features from a camera class above it, any good photographer should easily notice a difference. The resolution goes from 8.2MP in the 30D to 10.1 in the 40D.

It can also shoot pictures faster, a full 1.5fps faster. There are interchangeable focusing screens (I'll be honest and admit my ignorance now), Live View had been added, the LCD has gotten a half inch bigger, there is the Digic III image processor, 9 cross-type AF sensors, and a slightly larger viewfinder.

Appearances wise it has inherited a lot of proofing from the external conditions and an integrated cleaner. The menus are also far more similar to the Mark III. The best part is that your decision between this model and an older 30D shouldn't have to be made on price, with the body going for $1299 and the body plus a 28-135mm IS USM lens for $1499.

Canon announces the EOS 40D. Really. This isn't a rumor. [via Crave]
