Apple's 2020 upgrade of the iPhone SE may have a familiar name, but it's all-change from the original SE's hardware. The ethos remains the same, though. Take the latest processor, newer camera technology, and features from Apple's flagship smartphones, and squeeze them into an older casing for a much more affordable price.

So, from $399 you get a handset that looks like the old iPhone 8, but that has the Apple A13 Bionic processor and wireless charging of the iPhone 11 Pro. Still only a single camera, but now with more modern processing and editing tools. Plus, along with the 4.7-inch Retina display there's Touch ID for those who still prefer fingerprint security to Face ID.

Arguably what makes the new iPhone SE so valuable, however, is Apple's long-standing commitment to software upgrades. While there are cheap Android phones out there, many with specifications that nudge ahead of this new entry-level iPhone, few Android OEMs make the same effort to bring their older devices up to date with years of software upgrades. That alone might make the iPhone SE the model to finally coax users of old iPhones to trade-in for something new.
