Conversations with a Finnish Journalist

With Nokia’s Lumia 900 launch well underway, I have gotten a lot of questions from the press about Nokia, Microsoft, Nokia’s marketing strategy, Microsoft’s marketing strategy, and its chances of success. The most interesting was a conversation I had with a Finnish journalist. Nokia is extremely important to Finns, accounting for a measurable chunk of the entire country’s GDP, and the perception of Nokia in Finland differs significantly from the rest of the world. I found myself discussing some basic issues about the company and the market that tech journalists from the US and UK just don’t ask. The following is an edited version of our conversation.

Nokia outs Lumia app exclusives

Nokia Windows Phone users have a new batch of exclusive apps to look forward to, with the Finns revealing a handful of software details for Lumia including PGA Tour, Groupon and Angry Birds-themed special content. June will see the new PGA Tour app hit Lumia phones as a year-long exclusive, along with Live Tiles sports scores, team-level panoramas, score/league/team personalization, and the inclusion of tennis, NASCAR and the 2012 Olympics to the existing ESPN app this fall. Nokia: We’ll fight Windows Phone mismanagement class-action

Nokia faces a class-action suit by shareholders displeased at how the Finnish company's transition to Windows Phone has evolved, claiming Nokia execs are responsible for mismanaging the evolution. "[Nokia executives] told investors that Nokia’s conversion to a Windows platform would halt its deteriorating position in the smartphone market" the suit, filed in New York by Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, says. "It did not." Samsung “Mandel” Windows Phone snapped in the wild

Nokia has given 17,000 phones to developers

Back at Nokia World in October, Nokia pledged to give away 25,000 Windows Phone devices in order to stimulate app developing in the ecosystem. Now, Nokia has said it has given away around 17,000 so far, a significant chunk of its target. Skype for Windows Phone drops beta but still half-baked

Skype for Windows Phone has grown up, dropped its "beta" label, and begun offering free VoIP calls to users of handsets like Nokia's Lumia 800 and 900. First released in preview form back in February, the full v1.0 app is a free download from the Windows Phone Marketplace, and supports video calling, contact management and lower-cost SkypeOut calls to landline and mobile numbers. Nokia admits $1.7bn loss in Q1 2012

Nokia has announced its Q1 2012 financial results, with a huge €1.34bn ($1.7bn) operating loss despite sales of $7.4bn ($9.7bn) in sales. Smart devices sales more than halved year-on-year as Nokia’s Symbian line lost traction, declining 38-percent from Q4 2011; meanwhile, mobile phones – the bread and butter of Nokia’s bottom line – fell 32-percent year-on-year, and down 24-percent on the previous quarter. “We have faced greater than expected competitive challenges” CEO Stephen Elop admitted, adding that “actual sales results [of Lumia Windows Phones] have been mixed.”

No Windows Phone 8 upgrade for current handsets tip insiders

None of the currently available Windows Phone devices – including Nokia’s new Lumia 900 flagship – will get an upgrade to Windows Phone 8 “Apollo” insiders have warned, the next tough-to-swallow hurdle for Microsoft’s platform. Despite comments earlier by one Microsoft evangelist suggesting all Windows Phone 7 devices would get an upgrade to the incoming major refresh of the mobile OS, other sources say that’s definitely not the case.

IHS reveals Lumia 900′s iPhone roots

This week the folks at IHS, aka IHS iSuppli, have revealed what they've torn down and discovered to be as the price of the components which make up the Nokia Lumia 900. This device apparently costs a mere $209 in parts plus $8 to build, putting the device at 46 percent of its retail price. The reason Nokia is able to make this fabulous feat a reality is their relatively new triad of close ties with Microsoft and Qualcomm - this creating a hardware and software powerhouse which allows for top-tier features with lower-tiered pricing akin to Apple's own "playbook" for device creation.
