Qbo robot dons ASUS 3D sensor crown for intelligent autonomy

Open-source robot project Qbo has gained a new set of sensors, in the shape of a custom ASUS Xtion tiara that allows the 'bot to 3D map his environment, autonomously navigate and - most importantly - avoid obstacles. While Qbo already has twin HD webcam eyes and four ultrasonic sensors (two up front and two on the back), adding in the Xtion Pro Live sensor bar augments the robot's awareness of its environment, layering 3D on top of the 2D mapping it was already capable of recording. Microsoft's experiments with Kinect-style motion tracking technology for Windows 8 laptops could streamline the login experience as well as be used for games, though battery concerns might initially see the camera system offered as a self-powered add-on rather than fully integrated. After prototypes were reportedly caught in the wild earlier this month, sources inside Microsoft tell The Daily that the company is indeed readying a motion control licensing push, though there are hurdles to be overcome before that can happen. The Microsoft Kinect for the Xbox 360 has found itself being used for all sorts of things outside of gaming on the Xbox 360 console. That has led other firms to try to get in on the motion control action using their own motion control systems and so far no one has managed to be successful. PrimeSense, the motion-tracking company behind Microsoft's Kinect and ASUS' WAVI Xtion is obviously doing something right, as the company has just secured a new round of funding. The exact nature of the deal hasn't been disclosed, but when we talked to PrimeSense the company confirmed it was "extremely focused" on the "living room experience - browsing your media centre on your television." ASUS has announced a new entertainment peripheral, the ASUS WAVI Xtion, which promises gesture-based control for PCs in the living room. The new boxes uses PrimeSense Immersive Natural Interaction technology, and hook up via UWB to connect your TV to your computer.
