CTIA 2012 round-up: Devices

, May 10th 2012 Discuss [0]

The first of two round-up posts we’ve got here for the US-based mobile show of the year CTIA is one of devices exclusively, everything you need to know about what was well worth seeing down in New Orleans here in 2012. This year we had a look not only at the devices and accessories that the show had to offer, but hit the attack on social networks as well, with several galleries for your perusal and snapshots throughout our journey so you could take on the trip with us. As for devices, there really wasn’t a whole lot of new action coming on from this week specifically, but what was new was fabulous, and what was once only overseas was brought on with a fury.

HTC One S Review

, Apr 2nd 2012 Discuss [0]

The HTC One S may slot into the midrange in the company’s 2012 line-up, but HTC knows that it needs more than just average if it wants to reclaim its position in the smartphone segment. To do that, the One S delivers a slimline metal casing and ticks the big consumer draw elements of camera, screen and speed, with 8-megapixels, a crisp AMOLED display and 1.5GHz dual-core chipset brought out to play. Question is, does the One S deliver enough to distract from the heavyweight of the mainstream models, Apple’s iPhone 4? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

HTC One X Review

, Apr 2nd 2012 Discuss [0]

HTC needed to hit reset on its smartphone strategy. Lulled, perhaps, by several years of leading the Android device market, 2011 brought an incredibly strong push by Samsung and a growing mismatch between the agile software users desired and the bloated, over-stylized interface of HTC Sense. The HTC One X – and the One Series it leads – is the first of the company’s attempt to reclaim its former position, a Tegra 3 toting powerhouse with a big screen, boastful camera and slick design. Still with the specter of the Samsung Galaxy S III on the near horizon, not to mention Apple’s iPhone 5, the One X needs to do more than storm the spec sheet if it’s to make the impact HTC requires. Read on for the full SlashGear review.

Toshiba Excite tablet to launch March 6 for $530

, Feb 29th 2012 Discuss [0]

Toshiba has announced that its Excite 10 LE tablet, formerly called the Excite X10, will be arriving in stores March 6, coincidentally just one day ahead of the iPad 3 event. Perhaps due to the extreme bulkiness of the Toshiba Thrive, the company has taken a 180 with the Excite 10 LE, designing it to be the world's thinnest and lightest tablet. Toshiba had originally said the tablet would launch sometime in February, but perhaps waited for more iPad 3 speculation to be confirmed. Read The Full Story

Sources tip new Apple TV and accessory launch for March

, Feb 29th 2012 Discuss [0]

I think I used my original Apple TV all of four times since I received it. Early on it was a very boring device with little redeeming qualities. The new version of the Apple TV has been selling much more robustly than the original, and another new version is tipped to be coming in March. The new Apple TV is said to be launching alongside the new iPad according to sources and is known internally as the J33. Read The Full Story

ViewSonic has outed its Mobile World Congress line-up of smartphones and tablets, and with the Android-powered ViewPhone 4s running a 3.5-inch 960 x 640 display it's clear the iPhone 4S is the company's key target. It's not the only new ViewSonic device, though; read on for more. Read The Full Story

The Apple TV could be in line for an imminent refresh, with the news that Apple's set-top box is out of stock in multiple stores and, according to leaks from within Best Buy, can no longer be re-ordered.
