RIM Lands BlackPad.com, Tablet Rumors Heat Up

It's been a little bit of time since we last heard a rumor about the (supposedly) inevitable tablet from Research In Motion, so now's as good as time as any. The company based out of Waterloo has bought a new web address, apparently making sure that they get to keep the name, "BlackPad." It's changed hands in the past, and so the current belief is that RIM paid some kind of sum to the previous owner, but those details are missing from this new report.

If you'll recall, it's been rumored that the tablet's name would be BlackPad. There's been speculation about whether or not it's just a codename, but the louder voices say it's the title it'll ship with later this year. If it ships, mind you. There's still no confirmation from RIM that this thing even exists. But, it's a good sign that they're buying up Internet real estate to that effect. And, while we all assume that the BlackBerry 9800 Slider and BlackBerry OS6 are going to be shown off August 3rd, at their event with AT&T, that doesn't mean a tablet announcement could be completely out of the question.

Of course, we'll say this: we're not expecting that to happen at all. Especially considering it's an AT&T-backed event, too. Until RIM comes forward and announces their tablet plans, we'll just have to keep wondering what's next. But, the million dollar question is: is BlackPad the name they should go with?
