Ive: Apple Watch Was Three Years In The Making

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Apple design chief Jony Ive (pardon me, Sir Jony Ive) gave a rare glimpse into the process that led him to what we now know as the Apple Watch. As it turns out, Apple was on the forefront of wearable technology. They just sat on their golden egg for three years, until it was ready.

It's known that the Apple Watch was conceived and work started sometime after the passing of Steve Jobs. It's also known that folks wearing the iPod nano as a watch sparked Apple to get involved with wearables. Until now, we didn't know Apple has been working on the Apple Watch for three years.

So what took so long? Ive tells Vogue he and his team were simplifying. "Everything we've been trying to do, it's that pursuit of the very pure and very simple."

Even the niche functionality of sending your heartbeat to another person was part of the process for Ive and company. Ive said "This is a very big deal, I think. It's being able to communicate in a very gentle way."

So three years later, we've only got a few months more to go. Apple is believed to be ramping up Apple Watch production in January, which falls in line with a previous rumor we heard about the release timeframe (pun!).
