Google Officially Acquires BumpTop
So, BumpTop's no longer with us. At least, not in any kind of capacity that we could actually make use of. Today marks the official acquisition of the company that created the Operating System overlay (for touchscreens) that we've spoken about near the end of last year, after their launch earlier in 2009. All good things must come to an end, but at least when something gets bought up by Google, we can at least assume that it may not be gone for long.
First rumored about earlier this afternoon, it's been officially cleared up by BumpTop themselves. A letter has been posted on the company's website, which details their "good news." While the Windows-based version has been out for a few months, Mac users just got their own version this past January. Unfortunately, with the sale to Google, that means that BumpTop is no longer for sale. Additionally, there's not going to be any further updates for those who bit the bullet and bought the overlay.
There's a Pro version available, and for those that went down that path, there's still end-of-life service available for now, but there's no telling how long that will last. But hey, if you like downloading stuff that has an end-of-life somewhere in sight, you can download the app right now free of charge. There's no telling what's going to happen next, but we can certainly hope that Google's got good plans for the company and their creation. Check out the videos below to see what BumpTop is about.
