Feds Want To Ban In-Car Texting, Dialing, And Internet Browsing

Vehicle manufacturers these days have been ramping up their in-car infotainment systems aimed to create a continuous connected lifestyle. Although most systems are operated hands-free, they do add a new distractions to the driving experience, something the Department of Transportation frowns upon.

The DOT is proposing new guidelines for these in-vehicle systems that would limit how drivers can communicate whilst driving. Some of these limitations could involve certain features being completely disabled while the vehicle is in motion.

The proposal could also affect how mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are used in vehicles. Dialing, texting, browsing the internet, or even entering a GPS address by hand could be prohibited while in a moving vehicle.

The proposed recommendations have been published in the Federal Register where the public has 60 days to review and comment. Thereafter, public hearings will be held in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington D.C. in March.
