Windows Phone surprisingly survives HP Pwn2Own contest

Windows Phone surprisingly survives HP Pwn2Own contest

You can say what you want about Microsoft's mobile platform, but apparently, Windows Phone is a rather tough nut to crack. This revelation came on the second day of HP's Pwn2Own hacking contest, with this round targeting browsers of mobile devices. One contestant tried to gain control of the phone by attacking the browser but ultimately failed to break through the sandbox. That said, there was still some access gained, so Windows Phone didn't completely emerge unscathed, surviving with just some war wounds and probably a bit of pride.

HTC One M8 for Windows sneaks into T-Mobile

HTC One M8 for Windows sneaks into T-Mobile

Windows Phone devices outside of the Nokia, now Microsoft, Lumia line do exist but they might as well be non-existent given the rather low profile they have. HTC and Microsoft, however, wanted to change all that and offer the platform's fans a truly high-end option. Now, the HTC One M8 with Windows edition has finally completed its US carrier round, rather quietly creeping into T-Mobile's online catalog. With HTC's admirable design and hardware, this smartphone could very well be the Windows Phone flagship, if the OS can catch up.

It’s really official: “Microsoft Lumia” is the name

Nokia Lumia is no more. Of course, that was already made known by Microsoft's French Facebook account, but you know how social networks can be so fickle-minded these days. It can't get any more official than this though. Microsoft Senior VP for Marketing for Phones Tuula Rytilä has taken to what was once Nokia Conversations to share what the branding transition will bring and what its fans can expect and continue to expect as the company rolls out the new "Microsoft Lumia".

Microsoft finally settles on “Microsoft Lumia” name

Microsoft finally settles on “Microsoft Lumia” name

One chapter of Microsoft's, and Nokia's, mobile history is finally drawing to a close. After a bit of guessing and speculation on what Microsoft plans to do to unify its mobile branding, Nokia's, or rather Microsoft's, French Facebook page gave an unambiguous hint as to what the company has decided to call its smartphone brand, and it won't Microsoft Nokia Lumia Windows Phone phones or Nokia Lumia by Microsoft Mobile. It's going with a much simpler "Microsoft Lumia", which edges out not only "Nokia", but probably "Windows Phone" as well.

Archos VR Glasses jump into the virtual reality fray

The tips have proven to be true and French manufacturer Archos has indeed unveiled its next device obsession. While many OEMs are still struggling to join the smartwatch train, Archos perhaps decide that it's more fun to play, quite literally, in a virtual market. Virtual reality, that is. Luckily for us, while Archos does have its own smartphone line, it isn't rooting for any single one and has instead made its VR Glasses compatible with almost every size short of 6 inches.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition heading to Windows Phone soon

In a revelation that surprised no one, Minecraft lead developer Jens Bergensten has said that a port of the mobile edition of the popular game is already working on Windows Phone with a launch coming at an undisclosed date in the future. This could very well be the first fruits of Microsoft's acquisition of game dev studio Mojang, which handles Minecraft's development among other things. Whether it is just the least that fans of the game and the studio should be worried about remains to be seen.
