Porsche’s ultralight Boxster Spyder couldn’t resist one compromise

Porsche’s ultralight Boxster Spyder couldn’t resist one compromise

Throw out the excess weight, junk the fancy DSG gearboxes and the electric hood, and you get this: the new 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder, the lightest and most powerful yet. Unveiled this week at the New York Auto Show, the pared-back Porsche trades out the creature comforts drivers of even high-performance vehicles have come to expect, in favor of coaxing the most fun from the 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine. That adds up to a 0-60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds, and a top speed of 180 mph.

Porsche 918 Spyder assembly showcased in video

We've seen hypnotic videos from the world's various fast and efficient manufacturing facilities replete with conveyor belts, fast-moving human workers, and automated machine assembly. A new video from Porsche is in some ways the complete opposite, offering a surprisingly tranquil look at one of its limited Porsche 918 Spyder models being slowly and systematically assembled by hand. The video is a pure look at the process -- there's no obnoxious music or distracting narrative -- and the end result is a beautiful finished product. Check out the video after the jump.

Porsche 918 Spyder recalled over chassis issue

Porsche 918 Spyder recalled over chassis issue

Porsche can add its name to the list of auto makers undergoing recalls as of late, with the company initiating a recall of its illustrious 918 Spyder. This is a limited edition model, and of the 918 units produced (hence the name), 205 of them are being recalled. The reason revolves around the chassis, which could be prone to issues due to a fault discovered through internal quality testing. Though the potential for problems exist, no owners have filed any complaints related to it.

2015 Porsche 918 Spyder: A sports-hybrid you have to take seriously

2015 Porsche 918 Spyder: A sports-hybrid you have to take seriously

Porsche's latest sportscar, the 918 Spyder, has broken cover officially, but unlike most of the company's hard-driving twin seaters, this one relies in part on battery power for its blistering 0-60mph time. The 918 Spyder is actually a hybrid, pairing a 4.6-liter V8 mid-mounted gas engine good for 608HP with a 154HP hybrid module on the rear axle, and a 127HP electric motor on the front axel. That's a total of 887HP with all three working together, good for more than 211mph and a 0-62mph dash of 2.8s.

I think we can all agree that no one expected the Porsche 918 Spyder supercar to be cheap, but did anyone expect it to be OMG WTF expensive? Porsche makes some of the most capable sports cars on the planet. Many of these cars will see nothing more challenging than a trip out of the garage on occasion, but some Porsche vehicles are destined hit the track. Motorola XOOM 2 and Spyder leaked photos appear

Motorola XOOM 2 and Spyder leaked photos appear

When a leaked set of photos of a device, or in this case two devices: the Motorola Spyder (aka DROID RAZR) and XOOM 2, are released with carrier logos splayed across them, it generally means that release time is near. We've learned this year that this isn't always true, but on the whole we can judge a leak by its cover. Here what we're seeing is a brand new handset and a second-generation tablet on the way straight out of the generally-ok photo takers hands. Motorola, will you bring the heat inside 2011?
