Snapchat goes local with Geofilters

Ever wonder what it'd be like to see Snapchat messages from those most local to you in the world? Too bad. Today Snapchat has revealed that they've been working on what would appear to be just such a feature - but it's not, really. They call it their Community Geofilter system, and it's hosted on their Community Geofilter site. Instead of allowing you to send snaps to those in your area, this system puts tiny pictures on top of your messages - like the word VEGAS if you're in Vegas.

Snapcash lets you send money to friends via Snapchat

Snapcash lets you send money to friends via Snapchat

Snapchat users will soon have the option to send friends a few bucks via the vanishing messaging platform. Snapcash is a new function that resides within Snapchat, but uses a different service, Square, as a payment processor. To that end, Snapcash users quickly become Square users, as they’ll need to set-up a Square account to take advantage of Snapcash. Fortunately, there isn’t much to do aside from type. Snapchat recognizes that you’ve entered a dollar amount, and offers to let you actually send the cash along.

Snapchat is asking users to stop using third-party apps

Snapchat is asking users to stop using third-party apps

The knock on Snapchat of late is that it’s not secure. That’s a largely fair complaint about the service, which has given up plenty of data to hackers, even though it’s meant as a ephemeral service that keeps nothing. Snapchat blamed third-party apps for the vulnerability, and today have taken the first steps toward securing their platform. Or at least educating users on the difference between Snapchat and a third-party app. In a bold move, Snapchat is actively asking users to stop using those off-brand apps.

Snapchat succumbs to adverts this weekend

Snapchat succumbs to adverts this weekend

Call it growing up or selling out, but Snapchat is finally embracing advertising, with the first commercially-motivated snap being pushed to US users of the ephemeral messaging service this weekend. The advert - from an unnamed vendor - will show up in the Recent Updates section of the iPhone and Android app, Snapchat says, and is the first of periodic sponsored content that will be appearing moving forward. The reason? Unsurprisingly, it's just about money.

Snapchat leaks confirmed: celebrities joined by citizens

This morning it’s been made clear that Snapchat has had a bit of a breach. Not through Snapchat itself, but through 3rd-party servers of Snapchat images. Snapchat does not explicitly allow the use of their servers or their services to any other 3rd party - but apps get through, and these apps have been breached. The developers of Snapchat have released a statement on the subject, suggesting that it was not their fault directly, but that they'd planned on continuing their assault on malicious fakers of Snapchat services.

Yahoo was recently tipped by sources to be planning a significant investment into the startup, which is facing growing pressure to begin generating revenue. Advertising is the obvious route, which was recently tipped to be incoming by sources that spoke to the Wall Street Journal. Now the company's CEO Evan Spiegel has confirmed the news, at least in part, saying that ads will be arriving "soon".
