Hangouts in Chrome adds Phone tab, desktop notifications

Just yesterday, Google rolled out an update to Hangouts on Android that added a bit of whimsical fun via stickers. While not as cute as that, the desktop version of Hangouts is now also seeing its fair share of updates. The latest version of the Hangouts Chrome browser app has been updated not just to match the Android version's Material Design but also adds a similar Phone tab to the user interface. It also got its own desktop notifications to alert you to new messages.

Hangouts update brings stickers, location awareness

Hangouts update brings stickers, location awareness

Last night, at least one member of the Google Hangouts team posted to their Google+ social feed that sleep was going to be tough, and that we’d see an update for Hangouts today. The Android world buzzed about what that meant; were we finally getting full Google Voice integration? Was Hangouts about to be less power consumptive? Nope, we got stickers — and last-seen timestamps along with location sharing. There are also filters for video chat, where you can mask yourself in sepia, black and white, or vignette, among other filters.

Google Voice, Hangouts get SMS/MMS, Verizon support

Still using google Voice? There’s good news today, especially if you are on Verizon, or regularly chat with someone who is. Though we’re not out of the multiple-platform woods yet, an update to Voice does have some cross-app functionality.

Google Hangouts gives users 1 free minute for international calls

Perhaps you don't make international calls too often and so you don't bother paying for international service on your phone. Or, alternatively, maybe Hangouts is your voice communication service of choice. Regardless, Google is encouraging Hangouts users to make their international calls with the service, doing so by offering a single free minute that'll get you 60 seconds of talk time with a pal across the globe. The bonus minute is only going to be around until the strike of the new year, however, so don't dally.

Android 5.0 still doesn’t rely on Hangouts for messaging

Android 5.0 still doesn’t rely on Hangouts for messaging

With Hangouts, which replaced Google Chat and is trying to do the same to Voice, the idea was that we’d have one app to rule all the messaging. Instead, we’ve ended up with a mixed bag of kinda-works, sorta-works, and doesn’t-work-except-for-this-one-time. The Nexus 6 artwork, which prominently shows a messaging icon (new, but obviously a messaging icon) at the bottom, we all started questioning the direction. It seems google still hasn’t quite figured out messaging.

Hangouts has new look, voice calling for desktop

Hangouts has new look, voice calling for desktop

Google is rolling out a new Hangouts app today, meant to keep your desktop less cluttered while still letting you chat with whoever you need to. With the update, you can work on projects without having the annoying boxes to deal with. Messages come and go like conversations might, tucking neatly back under the icon. It’s a new look for Hangouts on the desktop, but borrows heavily from a mobile app some love to hate. Google also skipped over a key demographic this time around.
