StabCam is a GoPro stabilizer for the camera’s own mounts

StabCam is a GoPro stabilizer for the camera’s own mounts

GoPro’s little action cameras, like most other action cameras, are small and lightweight, which is convenient in many filming scenarios, but comes with a downside: keeping the camera steady while recording is difficult, and footage is often shaky. There are many stabilizers on the market that try to mitigate that, but some of them are too inconvenient for most action camera-users’ needs. StabCam differs from them, however, being designed specifically for the GoPro and any of the camera’s own mounts.

3D Robotics Solo drone adds autopilot for smart GoPro filming

3D Robotics Solo drone adds autopilot for smart GoPro filming

3D Robotics promised a smarter drone and today we get to meet Solo, a quadcopter with the promise of easily-programmed autonomous flight and camera control, live HD streaming, and a sub-$1k price tag. While it might look like other drones, slinging a GoPro camera in an independently-maneuverable gimbal underneath, Solo's cleverness is in 3D Robotics' twin computers: one in the drone and another in the controller with its smartphone mount. Rather than having to twiddle joysticks to get your shot, however, the drone uses a combination of GPS and preprogrammed Smart Shots that should see it navigate through the air around your route of choice, filming as it goes.

GoPro camera patent a dead ringer for the Polaroid Cube

Wait a second, those of you familiar with the Polaroid Cube might be saying, isn't that the miniature shooter we know so well? Not really, says GoPro, this is a new camera with new abilities - it just... maybe looks... similar. Not similar enough to warrant a mass breakdown, of course - and probably not similar enough to sue. But similar enough that we're going to give a long hard look and play with this device if and when it's released to the mass market.

CAMpanion mounts GoPro cameras on smartphones

CAMpanion mounts GoPro cameras on smartphones

The GoPro's tiny size is both a plus and a minus, depending on how you're using it in any given moment. The smartphone app and its live viewfinder feature comes in handy, but unless the camera is mounted somewhere, managing both devices at once is tricky. CAMpanion aims to solve this problem by mounting the GoPro camera onto the back of a smartphone, where it can more easily be managed using the smartphone app, and has the added benefit of utilizing the smartphone's light when in dim settings.

Light & Motion’s Sidekick adds light to your GoPro

GoPro makes some nifty little cameras, but their usefulness drops drastically when put up against a low-light situation. External lights are the solution, but if you're using a spotlight or some other secondary battery-powered unit, the odds are it is both inconvenient and less than effective. The folks at Light & Motion are addressing that issue with their new Sidekick light, a rectangular LED light that is design specifically for mounting next to a GoPro camera to function as a complementary flash.

Marriott teams with GoPro to offer guests HERO4 cameras

No vacation is complete without a camera to record every moment of it, and as such Marriott and GoPro have teamed up to provide guests at select hotels a complimentary HERO4 action cam. This'll benefit guests in obvious ways -- they'll have access to a rugged camera able to handle rough environments, and it'll serve as a way for GoPro to get its tiny action cameras into consumer hands. Marriott, on the other hand, might find a bit of favor in consumer eyes again following it ill-fated WiFi-blocking petition.
