Eyefi adds integration for Olympus and GoPro cameras

On Tuesday, Eyefi announced integration for Olympus cameras with WiFi and GoPro cameras. SpaceX GoPro shows the calmer side of a rocket launch

SpaceX GoPro shows the calmer side of a rocket launch

The forces exerted on a rocket during launch are incredible. The vibration, G forces, and friction that go along with firing off into space are very hard on equipment and people. However, once the rocket slips out of the Earth's atmosphere, things are suddenly calm and serene. This SpaceX footage is a perfect example of the serene part of a rocket launch.

GoPro, the makers of one of world's most popular rugged sports/action HD video cameras, has just announced a new model in its entry-level Hero lineup. Dubbed the GoPro Hero+LCD, the $299 camera features a LCD touchscreen, something sorely missing from the standard Hero model. Set to be released on June 6th in the US, the camera will also feature a handful of other nice upgrades, although nothing so big as to push the Hero out of the entry-level position.

This is GoPro’s crazy 16-camera Google Jump rig

GoPro has been busy lately, first showing off a spherical rig yesterday and then following up today with this, a 16-camera 360 Array to work with Google Jump. The first example of a Jump-compatible rig for recording entire panoramas of footage, the 3D-printed framework holds more than a dozen GoPro cameras and, optionally, a microphone with them, so that users can capture everything going on around them and share it on the new YouTube service.

GoPro has set its sights on drones and virtual reality

GoPro has set its sights on drones and virtual reality

GoPro, maker of the ever-popular little action cameras by the same name, has expanded its horizons a bit, or at least its vision of those future horizons. The company is eyeing both virtual reality and drones, GoPro’s CEO Nick Woodman revealed earlier today. The virtual reality aspect would be facilitated with something dubbed the Six-Camera Spherical Array, which is an accessory designed to hold six of the maker’s Hero 4 action cameras. The other project is a quadcopter said to be in the works. Unfortunately, precious few details about that particular project were revealed, though we can imagine it’ll include a nifty camera.

Pixar co-founder says smartphone, GoPro filmmaking are the future

It’s already happening on a small scale, but mobile videography just got a huge nod from Pixar co-founder John Lasseter. Speaking on a panel for ‘The New Audience: Moviegoing in a Connected World’ to an audience at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Lasseter said smartphone videography and GoPros are the future of film making. Some films, like the independent ‘Romance in NYC’, have been filmed entirely on iPhone, and released into major film festivals; it’s likely just the start, too.

StabCam is a GoPro stabilizer for the camera’s own mounts

StabCam is a GoPro stabilizer for the camera’s own mounts

GoPro’s little action cameras, like most other action cameras, are small and lightweight, which is convenient in many filming scenarios, but comes with a downside: keeping the camera steady while recording is difficult, and footage is often shaky. There are many stabilizers on the market that try to mitigate that, but some of them are too inconvenient for most action camera-users’ needs. StabCam differs from them, however, being designed specifically for the GoPro and any of the camera’s own mounts.

3D Robotics Solo drone adds autopilot for smart GoPro filming

3D Robotics Solo drone adds autopilot for smart GoPro filming

3D Robotics promised a smarter drone and today we get to meet Solo, a quadcopter with the promise of easily-programmed autonomous flight and camera control, live HD streaming, and a sub-$1k price tag. While it might look like other drones, slinging a GoPro camera in an independently-maneuverable gimbal underneath, Solo's cleverness is in 3D Robotics' twin computers: one in the drone and another in the controller with its smartphone mount. Rather than having to twiddle joysticks to get your shot, however, the drone uses a combination of GPS and preprogrammed Smart Shots that should see it navigate through the air around your route of choice, filming as it goes.
