Last we saw of Novatel Wireless' HSPA+ modem strategy was the MC996D clearing the FCC earlier this week; now the company has officially announced the Ovation MC998D, a triband HSPA+ (850/1900/2100 MHz) USB dongle that promises up to 21.6Mbps downlink rates and 5.76Mbps uplinks, network depending.  Meanwhile there's also a microSD card slot and integrated MIMO+ antenna array.

Novatel Wireless’ MC996D HSPA+ USB modem has cleared the FCC, paving the way for up to 21.6Mbps connectivity.  While the company has successfully blocked internal or external shots of the modem, together with the user guide, we caught up with a prototype MC996D back in April.

With only a few days left leading up to CTIA Wireless in San Diego, Verizon wireless pulled out all the stops and announced a boat load of new phones and a new subsidized 3G Gateway netbook.  The most impressive handset from the lineup is the HTC Imagio powered by Windows Phone 6.5 aka HTC Touch Diamond 2 (which we’ve reviewed here).  Other handsets include a rugged clamshell by Motorola – the Barrage, a unique phone made by Personal Communication Devices (PCD) and finally the Nokia Shade.

Whether the world (or, more accurately, the US) needs an unlocked Windows Mobile smartphone with the required band support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 2.1Mbps HSUPA on both AT&T and T-Mobile remains to be seen.  Nevertheless, Pharos believe that’s just what network-hopping executives are looking for, hence the triband UMTS Traveler 137.

Tech industry analysts iSuppli have performed a virtual break-down of the Palm Pre, and decided that the unreleased smartphone will cost the company $138 in hardware.  Working from both known suppliers and extrapolating the rest from Palm’s confirmed specifications, iSuppli deemed that Palm will see a 44-percent return on each device it sells to Sprint, after taking into account software licensing and royalty costs.

CTIA Wireless has come and gone for another year, and while many people are complaining about the general lack of new products, there were still interesting devices and services that we got to see demoed and get our hands on. We’re going to list off our favorites from the week, and hope the delay in getting this list up doesn’t bother you too much; we had to really think hard before we decided.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro was the last of the Apple notebook range to get a unibody update, but for those looking for superlative media editing and general processing grunt it more than delivers.  Apple shipped over the new MacBook Pro just after it launched, and we’ve been spending the last few weeks getting to grips with the new notebook and putting it through its paces.  After the cut, anti-glare screens, NVIDIA’s GeForce 9600M and portability from the thinnest, lightest 17-incher around.

Samsung’s Impression touchscreen AMOLED feature-phone has gone on sale today, the first commercially-available device with such a screen in the US.  Featuring a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3-megapixel camera and full-HTML browser, the Impressions’ crowning glory is its 3.2-inch display.

CTIA was last week, and the SlashGear team brought you lots of great coverage from the event. While new devices were scarce, we got a closer look at some impressive phones and products from some of our favorite companies. We’ll bring you up to speed on CTIA and other important news just in case you missed it.

We took a look at the MSI X-Slim X340 and compared it to the iPhone 3G and Lenovo ThinkPad X301 in terms of size. The MSI X-Slim X340 is an attractive laptop, and the planned sub $1000 price tag makes it even more so.
