This is Uber’s future (and massive) San Francisco campus

Uber is many things: controversial, successful, and usually undeterred. It's also wealthy, and what better way to demonstrate that wealth than a big glassy campus in tech-heavy San Francisco? The ridesharing service has commissioned a pair of companies to develop the campus, and concept images showing what the final structures will look like have been published. In them we see two buildings, one larger than the other, connected together with glassy walkways over the street sandwiched between them, as well as a lot of glass and interior wooden rooms.

Google campus will soon be powered by wind

Google campus will soon be powered by wind

Anyone who’s taken a ride through California’s Altamost Pass knows it’s gusty up there. To take advantage, wind turbines don’t dot the landscape — they dominate it. In a new project that will replace about 770 turbines with 48 new machines (that produce twice the energy as the dated turbines), Google has announced they will purchase about half the energy from the new machines. That power grab (literally) will provide Google with enough renewable energy to power their entire corporate campus in Mountain View.

Apple’s new California solar farm will turn their stores, campus green

Apple’s new California solar farm will turn their stores, campus green

In an attempt to go completely green with their operations in California, Apple is building a solar farm in Monterrey County. The $850 million project will span 1,300 acres, and feed enough power to the grid to offset everything Apple does in California. Their 50-plus retail stores, new campus, existing offices, and data center in Newark — all offset by this solar farm. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the new solar farm today as he spoke at Goldman Sachs Technology conference, and called it Apple’s ‘most ambitious project ever’.

Amazon partners with 3 campuses in bid to entice college students

Kindles may come in handy for literature and other linearly consumed print media, but textbooks are something many still prefer in physical form, and many students turn to Amazon to get them. The company is apparently looking to capitalize on this, as it has just unveiled its new Amazon Campus service in partnership with a trio of higher education institutions: Purdue University, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and the University of California Davis. Students at all three will get access to textbooks and university-specific gear like branded shirts, among other things, along with the promise of next-day shipping.

Apple Campus 2 will breathe new life into century-old barn

Apple Campus 2 will breathe new life into century-old barn

As the Apple Campus 2 slowly takes shape, one relic from the past will remain. In tearing down the old HP office location to build their “spaceship” campus, Apple found they also had a barn. The Glendenning Barn is leftover from a time when Cupertino was more orchards than silicon, when we farmed fruits instead of data. To make way for their campus, Apple dismantled the Barn, but took precise instructions on its design and construction so they could re-assemble it and give it a home at Apple.

The Apple Campus 2 video that clinched the Cupertino spaceship

The Apple Campus 2 video that clinched the Cupertino spaceship

A clearer version of the video showing Apple Campus 2 - aka the Apple spaceship - has been shared, complete with architect Norman Foster reminiscing on Steve Jobs' first telephone call in which he asked for help designing the huge, circular complex. "One of the most memorable things - and perhaps vital to the project," Foster says, "was Steve saying "don't think of me as your client, think of me as one of your team.""

Apple Spaceship campus begins construction with life-sized models

Apple Spaceship campus begins construction with life-sized models

In what very much appears to be a play on the old school-bound project which asks what the use is of a life-sized map, Apple has begun constructing life-sized models of the structures that'll be included in their Spaceship campus. While we've previously put quotation marks around the word Spaceship when speaking about this campus in the past, it's been called that name so very many times at this point that we've decided to simply call it that as a matter of fact. Here we're seeing the first of a number of structures that'll be re-built for the final campus.

Apple’s spaceship campus visualized in array of official renderings

Up close you'll get with the first set of renderings from Apple itself of the company's next-generation campus. This campus is the same you've heard about over the past year, the one nicknamed the "spaceship campus" due to its appearance, one of a flying saucer ring sort of thing. These images have been seen in brief in the past, but only extremely tiny-like for the public - now it's time to get a bit more in-depth.

Amazon biodome campus design proposal approved by Seattle board

Apple isn't the only company looking to create an eye-catching campus. Apple Campus approved in unanimously in Cupertino

It's official: the "spaceship campus" is ready to roll as the Cupertino City Council lends their unanimous approval of the Apple project at their October meeting. This month has already shown off a couple of views of the upcoming beast of an architectural project - now Apple can celebrate the initiation of the building itself. One move remains, of course, that being the second public reading of the formal agreement between Apple and the City of Cupertino, this scheduled for November 19th, with the full set of Apple's permits ready to hit the books the day after.
