Beyonce album Target store skip enlivens digital media war

Beyonce album Target store skip enlivens digital media war

If the fact that Target announced that they wont be carrying Beyonce's 2013 self-titled album weren't enough, the writing on the wall should be. Here we're seeing another big push in the war waged between artists, record labels, and those that would stand to lose profit at the hands of the oncoming digital revolution. While the release of Radiohead's "In Rainbows" had the record industry in a tizzy with its "pay whatever you want" model, Beyonce's "release as a surprise to iTunes first" model seems to be taking retail stores out a whole new door.

Madonna to debut new video on Meerkat, not TIDAL

In just under two hours, Madonna will release a new video. That might not be too exciting, but she’s releasing it via Meerkat, the livestreaming service that makes its home on Twitter. It’s not known why Madonna chose Meerkat over another service (likely an agreement reached ahead of Periscope’s arrival onto the scene), but it’s not new for Madonna; she previously debuted a video on Snapchat. What is new is her choice to bypass TIDAL, a service she has agreed to provide exclusive content for.

In the bid, Jay-Z acquired hi-definition streaming service Tidal, which seems to be the real goal in acquiring Aspiro. Today, Tidal is being relaunched, and is allegedly going to start challenging others like Spotify or iTunes for new releases from big-name artists. If successful, expect the new Beyonce album to hit Tidal unannounced instead of iTunes.

Big surprise: Facebook is working on VR apps

Big surprise: Facebook is working on VR apps

When Facebook acquired Oculus last year, many were left scratching their heads at the combination. Regardless of what Facebook's intentions were, it made an unspoken promise to leave Oculus alone to do what it does best: develop VR products and experiences. That doesn't mean, however, that Facebook has no plans to capitalize on that purchase itself. Thus it came as a surprise to no one that Chief Product Officer Chris Cox admitted at the Code/Media conference that Facebook is working on some VR apps. The question, of course, is what for.

The big Instagram losers lost millions

The big Instagram losers lost millions

Instagram's cull of spam accounts and users not toeing the line over community guidelines has taken a huge bite out of the follow counts for many high-profile users, a pre/post "Instapurge" survey has revealed. Announced last week as part of the photo-sharing social network's ongoing war against fake profiles, the spam sweep took effect yesterday and wiped anything from a handful of followers from some user's accounts, to several million from others - including Instagram's own account, in fact. Among the biggest losers have been musicians, with Justin Bieber, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift all seeing their fan numbers tumble, but it's the non-celebrity users who have been most vocal in their outrage.

Beyoncé surprises the world with digital-first self-titled album

Beyoncé surprises the world with digital-first self-titled album

There might be yet another entertainment industry paradigm shift afoot, and Beyoncé is going to be there. Just as Kickstarter paved the way for games and even films to be made sans traditional publishers, Beyoncé has just made something almost impossible, or at least unforeseeable, happen. She has just released a complete album, in digital format first, without the usual pre-release marketing stunts, and, more surprisingly, without anyone even hearing about it until it launched.
