Cue inappropriate jokes. MediaTek is really putting the heat on Qualcomm, more so after seeing a chink in its armor courtesy of Samsung. Just recently it tried selling the idea of a three-tier deca-core mobile processor even while Qualcomm has just gotten started with 8 cores. Now with its own "Pump Express Plus", it is taking aim at Qualcomm's fast charging technology, Quick Charge 2.0, that is slowly snaking its way into the latest flagships and quickly becoming a much wanted feature in smartphones.

MediaTek chip leapfrogs Samsung and Apple (in core count, anyway)

How many cores does your smartphone have? If it's anything less than ten - and it's almost certain to be - then MediaTek has just eclipsed it, its new Helio X20 mobile processor packing a whopping ten cores. The company calls it Tri-Cluster architecture, and is promising the usual mantra of simultaneous power and efficiency. Still, before we discount the chip as just another case of "more is better" thinking, there could well be something to MediaTek's approach.

Samsung now rumored to eye MediaTek for some handsets

It's rumors like this that make you wonder if there's more to the breakup between Samsung and Qualcomm than first believed. It is, after all, not exactly unreasonable for the Korean manufacturer to push its own Exynos chips to the forefront, but little did we expect that it might be pushing Qualcomm out of its products in more ways than one. Now MediaTek is entering the picture, with Taiwanese media painting a scenario where the chip maker will be present in some of Samsung's future smartphones.

ARCHOS smartphones bring Mediatek to MWC 2015

A number of new ARCHOS smartphones are headed to Mobile World Congress 2015, each of them with MediaTek quad-core processors and relatively low price points. This is not the first time ARCHOS has released smartphones at this time of year - they have the last several years running, in fact. It is the first time they're bringing three phones with Android 4.4 KitKat. They're all coming with displays larger than 5-inches, as well - so that age of small-screen smartphones is pretty much over for this brand.

MediaTek catching up with Snapdragon 810 in benchmarks

Qualcomm's latest flagship chip, the Snapdragon 810, is already under a lot of pressure for certain issues, warranted or not. It could probably do with less problems but it seems that rival MediaTek won't let it catch a break. The latter's upcoming chip, a certain MT6795, is now said to be on par with the Snapdragon 810. That is, at least based on leaked benchmark scores. Whether that will be enough to catapult MediaTek to the forefront of the mobile chips race is another question entirely.

MediaTek has announced a new product that it claims is the world's first 4G LTE octa-core smartphone SOC using the just announced ARM Cortex-A17 CPU. The MediaTek part also supports Ultra HD H.265 codec. The MT6595 employs ARM big.LITTLE architecture and uses MediaTek CorePilot tech to deliver a Heterogeneous Multi-Processing platform with eight cores.
