Chitika shows iOS web traffic on top with Samsung controlling Android

Earlier today the folks at Chitika showed off their newest chart of impressions from Android devices, showing Samsung taking the cake in a big way. Since its release, SlashGear reached out to Chitika for more data on the larger mobile device market, showing iOS as well. As you'll see, while Samsung dominates Android, Apple's iOS takes the largest portion of the web traffic market for smart devices.

Chitika data shows Samsung Galaxy S dominance with 7, 10.1-inch tablets

The folks behind the network known as Chitika, generally known for their advertising network, has shown data detailing the breakdown of Samsung mobile devices during the month of December, 2013. The study seeks online ad-impressions across all Android devices, breaking down smartphone and tablet data, then by devices, showing here what they suggest is “the largest single Android manufacturer traffic source”, suggesting also that Samsung’s tablet share in the United States in web usage trails behind Apple’s iPad and all tablet devices (combined, as a brand) made by Amazon.

There's really no two ways about it - studies looking at the use of tablets on the market today suggest that the iPad continues its reign of dominance - at least in the web traffic universe. As the iPad appears to gain steam in studies of web traffic as revealed by Chitika this month, if only by a bit more than a percentage point each month, the difference is much more significant when considering the competition. All this chatter about iOS 8, and it seems everyone is slow to upgrade! Via several sources who track which OS is in use on their network, we find that iOS 8 is not yet widely used, and is seeing a slower uptake than iOS 6 or iOS 7 before it.

Chitika, Mixpanel, Appsee, and Tapjoy are all networks who provide information about OS use based on their ad networks. Through charts they have provided, we see that iOS 8 is on a slow march to its eventual takeover. There could be a variety of reasons for this slow iOS 8 adoption rate, which we’ll unceremoniously jump right into!

The tablet market may have more options in it than ever before, but Apple's iPad still dominates usage in North America according to the latest research. Samsung made gains on the iPad in Q2 2014, stats firm Chitika says, but its 8.3-percent of the tablet web traffic pie pales in comparison to Apple's 77.2-percent, with the iPad's share declining slightly year-on-year but not enough to shift the chart considerably.
